Fa amma bini`mati robbika, fa khaddits…
Mohamado Agungu Buramanteia = Muhammad Agung Bramantya
The Fujiwara Institute of Technology, the precursor of the Faculty of Science and Technology of Keio University, was founded by Ginjiro Fujiwara’s own funds. The campus was located in present Hiyoshi Campus area and the first President was Shinzou Koizumi. Afterwards, The Fujiwara Institute of Technology was donated to Keio University and became the Faculty of Engineering. However, the school buildings were destroyed due to World War II air raids and moved to Koganei. Then, it was finally relocated to Yagamidai and reorganized as the Faculty of Science and Technology.
To commemorate this history, the Fujiwara Award and Fujiwara Scholarship were established from the proceeds of the Fujiwara Scholarship Fund at this Faculty and Graduate School of Science and Technology. The Fujiwara Award is awarded to undergraduate students who evidence excellence not only in studies but also in social and cultural activities. It is also awarded to graduate students who achieve remarkable research results. The Fujiwara Scholarship is awarded to Ph.D. students, included admitted international students, who evidence promise of significant progress in research.
Profile: Ginjiro Fujiwara (1869-1960)
Ginjiro Fujiwara was born in Nagano, Japan. He entered Keio University when he was 17 years old, and thus he became one of Yukichi Fukuzawa’s descendants. After employment at the Mitsui Bank and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., he moved to Oji Paper Co., Ltd. and helped with the growth of this firm. He was later called “the Paper King” and held the position of Commerce and Industry Minister (presently the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). He was eager to make resource-limited Japan a technology-oriented nation, establishing the Fujiwara Institute of Technology with his own funds in 1939. He then donated this Institute to Keio University in 1944.
